Griffin Exotic Wood

Burma Blackwood
(dalbergia lanceolaria)

Burma Blackwood is an unusual rosewood from Southeast Asia.  NOTE: AS of 2021 we know of no new supplies of this wood for several years.  We seem to be the only vendor that has any left currently. It is very dense with an interesting grain that is hard to put into words.  There are greys, blacks/browns, and even little bits of bluish color.  The grain varies greatly from one piece to the next.   Reputedly it is good for musical instrument making and detail work.  A fascinating wood.  The endgrain is also interesting.  Click here for an endgrain photo.

various types of grain in the Rare rosewood

Sample photo of turning squares showing various appearances of pieces for sale.   Virtually gone from the market

This wood is flat out rare now and it was always a very rare type of rosewood. For a brief period you could get it easily now it's almost all gone from the market. And it may be a long time before we see it again, if ever because the supply chain fell apart years ago and there is no known way to get it back together. The squares will come with wax on the ends in most cases. They are DRIED though (around 8-9%) and sizes vary a little bit as these were cut overseas rather than in our shop. Sizes are usually a little over 12" long and can be up to 13" long. Square sizes can be as small as 1 3/8 in some places or as large as 1 5/8 or more in some pieces. Most are about 1.5 x 1.5 x 12.5 but expect a little variation in size.
