Australian Blackwood

Australian blackwood (acacia melanoxylon) . It has a native range along the edge of eastern Australia and also the eastern part of the island of Tasmania. With Koa selling at outlandish prices (now costs me the same per board foot to buy koa as amboyna burl or more) Australian blackwood is a great alternative to koa at much lower prices. If you have worked with koa you’ll know what these are like. Apparently it was called “Blackwood” in Australia because of the fact that the tannins in the wood can leave dark colors on your skin. However I have not noticed any marks on my skin after cutting this wood, so it must vary from one tree to another.

Australian Blackwood GG pen blanks

Australian Blackwood (acacia melanoxylon) pen blanks in GG. Gallery grade means there are at least two very figured sides, or sometimes even 3-4 sides that are figured. Close relative of Hawaiian Koa and very hard to tell apart sometimes. But less expensive, and more importantly, still available unlike Koa which is nearly gone in high figured pieces. Sizes are 3/4 x 3/4 x 5-6 inches long. Pen blanks are always sold dried.

Wonderful dried and figured pieces that look just like Koa, at a much lower price. These all came from a very large slab. It was part of the outside of a large tree and every bit of it was highly figured. Some Australian blackwood looks more like the photo at the top of this page, but this slab produced pieces that look so much like koa I cannot tell them apart from Koa, and I cannot guarantee that this isn't really koa that was mis-identified as Aussie Blackwood.
